December 2012

Mini Christmas Tree making

The ladies from Wythit enjoyed a creative and fun evening making miniature advent Christmas trees. A relaxed session allowed artistic licence to come to the fore and all trees made were individual, unique and personalised. A pleasant evening to begin the run up to Christmas.

November 2012

First Aid

Wythit Girls attented an Improvisation Workshop to cover Emergency 1st Aid Tips, from Tim Caine, a member of the Swaledale Mountain Rescue team. A hands on session with accompanying slides covering emergencies such as elecrocution, burns, sprains, asthma etc. A fun time was had by all.

October 2012

Halloween Evening

Our meeting was taken over by ghosts, witches, etc! Members brought a pumpkin each and set about making some wonderful creations. We quickly learned that we have some very artistic members!

There was a real party atmosphere with candles, dimmed lights, decorations and nibbles. The photographs show the results. A very spooky but fun evening!

September 2012

WI Swishing Party

Wythit WI held a Swishing Party (like Gok Wan’s TV programme where women bring items of clothes, shoes, bags and accessories they no longer wear and swap them for someone else’s! ) It’s a great way of recycling and getting something for nothing. We set the room up with clothes rails showing the clothes sizes, tables displaying the other items and a changing room complete with full-length mirror for checking if clothes fit and looked good. The party was great fun and most people ended up taking home quite a few new items. We had a great time swapping, trying things on and guzzling lots of nibbles etc. Everyone who made it enjoyed it enormously. Roll on the next one!!

North Yorkshire West Federation Book

This book has travelled its way around the North Yorkshire West Federation area for many, many months and was received from members of Aiskew WI who arrived in Bedale by train.

Wythit girlies took the book as you can see by the photos and we are now thinking about how to deliver it to the next WI on the list in typical Wythit WI style (extraordinarily and dynamically). Maybe we’ll abseil it down a cliff to them or turn up on a gleaming motorbike or something equally unusual for a WI!!

August 2012

Nordic Walking

Helen Adams from River Mountain Experience came to our meeting and explained the basic techniques of Nordic Walking. It’s a type of fitness walking with specially designed poles, developed from an off-season ski-training activity.

We were all given a set of poles and gloves which clipped to them and off we marched into the sunset (actually it was Bedale Park!). During Nordic Walking, opposite arms and legs alternate rhythmically, swinging back and forth.

We all had a very energetic evening and Helen was very patient with us. It was great fun and a chance to try a different form of exercise.

July 2012

Pamper Evening

Our planned activity for the evening - tenpin bowling had to be cancelled due to a mechanical fault at the bowling alley. Instead the evening session was hosted by Carolyn M L Chapman; a qualified beauty therapist, professional skin therapist and make-up artist. Carolyn welcomed us into her family home at Hunton; Bedale, which is also the location of her beauty business www.beautysalontreatmentsyorkshire.com

We were warmly welcomed with delicious refreshments and made comfortable in the beautiful lounge with breath-taking views of the local countryside. Carolyn carried out a treatment on all the attending Wythit members and guests. The choice of treatments were either an express facial & hand massage or an Indian Head Massage. The treatments were fabulous and every member left feeling extremely relaxed and regenerated ready to start the week ahead.

Thank you very much Carolyn for a fabulous evening and for welcoming us into your home at such short notice - a brilliant time was had by all!

June 2012

Basic Car Maintenance

This evening Wythit welcomed Wayne from John Gills Garage in Aiskew. Wayne is an experienced car mechanic who gave us a practical, valuable demonstration in essential car maintenance and vehicle safety. Wayne taught us some valuable skills about basic car care, how to inspect the vehicle and pointing out areas of specific importance when maintaining the car.

Some of the skills we learnt were how to check and top-up fluids, how to check tyre safety, tyre pressure and how to change a tyre. Wayne invited volunteers to demonstrate their new learning - this was great fun watching members putting into practice their new found skills. A good night was had by all.

Special thanks to Wayne and Carol from John Gills Garage.

Easy Ideas for your Garden

Our guest speaker for the evening was Alistair from Alistair Baldwin Associates based here in Bedale. Alistair leads a team of talented designers, running a portfolio of exciting projects across the UK. With the use of computing software, we were shown how plants were utilised to decorate a garden, make garden rooms and to create an effective outdoor space. Alistair also discussed the importance of scale, proportion, colour mixing of plants and the effects of seasons when planting up your garden. It was an informative and thought provoking night, to which we all left with new ideas how to rejuvenate our gardens. Many thanks Alistair - a good night was had by all.

April 2012

AGM, Pub Quiz & Psychic evening

We held our AGM first during which we reflected on the past year, on our sucesses and our interesting activities undertaken and then formed a new committe with some new faces, so it should be a dynamic year ahead! We then all charged downstairs to the pub for a Pub Quiz hosted by Penny, our Treasurer and Yasmin her daughter. It was great fun although some of us found it pretty challenging! Some of the other customers joined in too making it more competitive. It was a close call but someone had to win. A fabulous evening all in all.

We also took part in the Bedale Group of WIs Spring Show at the Chantry Hall, Bedale on 14th April. We won one of the categories and had runners-up in others. Wythit ran the raffle and enjoyed participating in another community event.

March 2012

Bread Making Workshop at Bread Actually, Bedale Community Bakery

Wythit WI had a great time and a huge turnout at Bread Actually, Bedale’s Community Bakery, Station Yard, Bedale. We made gorgeous pizzas and tried lots of their delicious breads. Real hands-on stuff! Thankyou lots to Lucy and Carole for telling us all about the Project and the documentary and generally for a great evening. The Wythit girlies all enjoyed themselves and are now set to try bread-making for themselves at home!!

February 2012

Card Making & Decoupage

Jayne Portrey-Young expertly showed the Wythit girlies how to make Home-made cards using decoupage. It was tricky but we all managed to make one or two great cards from a decoupage kit and adding messages with stickers, rubber message stampers and ink pads, cut-out design stampers, and tranfers. The results speak for themselves! A great night was had by all.

January 2012

Yoga

Thanks to our Yoga teacher, Jacqui, who took us through some yoga poses and relaxation techniques. All Wythit ladies enjoyed themselves and wondered when the next class was going to be!
